Genomics Hackathon 2023

The Centre for Brain Research (CBR) invites motivated student teams to participate in an exciting Genomics Hackathon.

Date: 24th March 2023, Friday

Time: 8 am to 7 pm (11-hour event)

Venue: Centre for Brain Research, Indian Institute of Science campus, Bengaluru

This event does not have the option of online participation.

Overview

There has been an explosion of genomic data over the last decade, and there is a need to use creative computational approaches to extract biological insight from these data. GenomeIndia, funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and spearheaded by CBR is an exemplary initiative in this direction.

At this in-person hackathon, teams of students will have the opportunity to work on a human genomic dataset and implement statistical/ML methods to answer questions about disease risk and underlying genetic structure in human populations in this dataset. This will allow students trained in quantitative fields to get an understanding of genomic data and the kinds of biological questions one can answer with statistical methods. The event will provide a platform for students and early-career researchers to get hands-on experience with genomic data and analyses.

The results of the hackathon will be announced on the same day. The winning teams will receive attractive cash prizes.

Selection process

Students who have recently completed or are in the final year of BTech, MTech, MSc in engineering and science streams are eligible to apply. Students having a background in quantitative fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, and similar disciplines will be preferred. [Note: Students affiliated with GenomeIndia sequencing centres (CBR, CCMB, IGIB, and NIBMG) are requested not to apply for this program.]

Teams of up to 4 people are invited to apply online [closed] latest by 11:59 PM on 13th March 2023.

A limited number of teams will be selected based on preliminary screening of applications. Once teams are selected for the Hackathon, the organisers will provide background study material to facilitate familiarisation with the area. On the day of the hackathon, during the first hour, the organizers will be around to go over the premise and basis of the dataset with the participants. All members of invited teams are expected to bring their own laptops.

CBR will provide support for travel, meals during the workshop, and accommodation in Bengaluru.
